Managing a volunteer program can feel like you’re on a merry go round: constantly going round and round as you recruit new volunteers who may or may not stick around until the ride stops spinning. Let’s talk about developing a thoughtful volunteer program that works for your organization – how to plan meaningful positions, where to find the volunteers to fill those roles and how to provide the care and feeding needed to retain them.
Jackie Maas has over 20 years experience managing volunteers. Currently the City of Plymouth’s volunteer coordinator, she has also managed volunteer programs at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota Historical Society. Her favorite aspects of working with volunteers are the relationships she builds with them and the challenge of matching volunteer skills and abilities with work that needs to get done. In her opinion, the number one reason why people volunteer is to feel useful.
